An Appalachian Christmas
The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys are, from left, Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman, David Johnson and Joe Shannon.
Mountain Home Music celebrates Christmas with guitars, banjos,
fiddles, dulcimers and singers.
In other words, it’s “An Appalachian Christmas.”
“Mountain
Home Music closes its concert season each year with ‘An Appalachian Christmas,’” said Joe Shannon,
founder and host of Mountain Home Music. “It’s a free concert, but a collection is taken, and
100 percent of the proceeds go to the Hospitality House and to Santa’s Toy Box.”
Performing
will be The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys, Mary Greene and The Mountain Laurels.
The
Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys feature Steve Lewis, a two-time National Banjo Champion; David Johnson,
a member of the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame; Scott Freeman, a Henderson Festival Mandolin
Champion; and Josh Scott, who plays bass with the Bluegrass Boys and also with piano man Jeff
Little.
Greene is well known throughout the region as a vocalist and
multi-instrumentalist. The Mountain Laurels — Rhonda Lorence, Elaine Gray, Suzie Mills,
Connie Woodard, and Lauren Hayworth — are a local band that plays Appalachian and Celtic
music.
“We started ‘An Appalachian Christmas’ about 16 years ago as a way to give back to the
community,” Shannon said. “The success we’ve had is based on a lot of things, but one essential is
the support of the community. Since Mountain Home Music started 19-years ago, we’ve had wonderful
support from locals folks, area businesses, schools and churches. We are grateful for this
support.”
“An Appalachian Christmas” will take place Saturday, Dec. 1, at Grace Lutheran
Church. Starting time is 8 p.m. Grace Lutheran is located at 115 E. King St. in downtown Boone
(across from the Dan’l Boone Inn).
