2011: A Good Year for Gillian

Gillian Welch’s latest album, ‘The Harrow and the Harvest,’ came in No. 1 in WNCW’s recent listener poll.

For Americana darling Gillian Welch, 2011 was a banner year.

She released her first album in eight years, “The Harrow and the Harvest,” toured extensively to packed houses all over the United States, and contributed mightily to The Decemberists album, “The King is Dead,” their first disc to debut at the No. 1 position on the Billboard charts.

The year ended on a high note for Welch when “Harrow” topped the annual WNCW-FM year-end listener poll. With 1,121 votes tabulated, the majority of them from listeners in western North Carolina, Welch and musical partner David Rawlings were deemed the best of the year.

“This year’s list is eclectic as always, with 13 regional acts, 15 bluegrass acts and assorted blues, indie-rock, singer-songwriter albums all included,” said Martin Anderson, music director and morning host at WNCW. “From Gregg Allman to Uncle Mountain, from the 20-year-old Sarah Jarosz to the almost-85 Ralph Stanley, there’s a nice wide spectrum here. Ten of the artists were in our very first Top 100 countdown in 1990.”

Along with Welch sitting at the top spot, the top 10 positions featured more women artists than usual. Alison Krauss and Union Station’s “Paper Airplanes” came in second; The Decemberists’ “The King is Dead,” with contributions by Welch, came in fourth; the Tedeschi-Trucks Band, featuring singer and guitarist Susan Tedeschi, came in sixth; Tara Nevins’ “Wood and Stone” came in eighth; and Abigail Washburn’s “City of Refuge” came in 10th.

WNCW’s top 100 list reflects the diverse musical styles featured daily by the radio station’s music mix. What other station’s top 100 list would find John Prine (No. 31) next to My Morning Jacket (No. 32) or Death Cab for Cutie (No. 88) next to godfather of bluegrass Ralph Stanley (No. 89)?
