There Will Be Mud

Pottery show Saturday in Blowing Rock

On Saturday, July 11, the “Mud on the Mountain” Pottery Show and Sale will be held. The event takes place

at Twisted Tree Studio on Artists Alley, located off U.S. 221, 4 miles south of Blowing Rock. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Six area ceramic artists, Barbara Scarborough, June Kay, Nancy Graham, Connie Cox, Kate Colclaser and Patti Carmen, are displaying and selling their work.

Sitting before the same ingredient –  clay – these six women have visualized this humble medium into becoming something useful and yet beautiful. Drawing from a variety of skills, this clay has been wheel-thrown, rolled into slabs, extruded, sculpted, texturized, and/or carved.

After creating the form, each artist carefully considers the application of stains and glazes for the unique piece, focusing on producing works of functional art. This entire process is a challenge both to the clay and to the artist.

Arriving to the High Country throughout the years from diverse places – ranging from Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas and even the Caribbean – each of these artists draws inspiration from their upbringing, environments and the beauty of this area, which is keenly reflected in their work. Influenced by the artistry of nature, these creative women have come to express themselves in unique ways.

This event is hosted by Twisted Tree Studio and Gallery on Artists Alley. There will be afternoon demonstrations on the hour beginning at 1 p.m. Door prizes will also be given.

Look for signs and balloons just past Westglow Spa on Saturday, July 11.
