Group.
The second performance in a series of four at historic St. Johns
in Valle Crucis features a family friendly concert with a talented
all-percussion ensemble known for combining exciting music,
virtuoso musicians and theatrical sensibilities.
Named after 17th century kettledrummers, Jacque and Andre Philidor,
Philidor is primarily a chamber music group which performs music
written for percussion instruments. Comprised of North Carolina
musicians, John R. Beck, Rob Falvo, Wiley Sykes and Peter Zlotnick,
the ensemble will perform pieces representing musical traditions
from cultures worldwide. Learn how percussion instruments can
sing as well as provide beat in this creative, tantalizing program
in which members of the audience may meet and interact with
the artists.
Jacquelyn Bartlett, a Boone resident, performer and professor
of harp at Appalachian State University, UNC-Greensboro and
the N.C. School of the Arts, is serving as the artistic director
of the series. Bartlett brings lively, professional music to
the stage of St. Johns. Holy Cross Episcopal Church, which
oversees events at St. Johns Church, sponsors the performances.
Beginning at 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month, guests
are invited to bring a picnic, blankets and chairs to join the
musicians and fellow concert goers for a feast on the lawn following
the event. Attendance is $15 for adults; students, $10; children
under 12 years, free-of-charge. Proceeds help underwrite the
continuing summer series, Music at St. Johns. Pets are
not allowed on the property during these events. For more information
about the Music at St. Johns summer concerts or St. Johns
