Classic rock cover band Gone Bananas
plays June 19-20
By Jeff Eason
Gary Dreyfuss, a singer and guitarist with the quintet Gone
Bananas, has an amusing take on performing in a classic rock
covers band.
 |
We do not consider ourselves an oldies band or a classic
rock band, Dreyfuss said. We are a green
band, we recycle!
Dreyfuss and his Gone Bananas compatriots will come to Blowing
Rock this weekend for a two-night gig at Canyons of the Blue
Ridge on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20. The show is free,
and the music starts around 10 p.m. each evening.
In addition to Dreyfuss, the band includes Steve Boyes and Russell
Brown on guitar, Jerry Sorn on bass and Darren Goot on drums.
This marks the second time that the band has come to Blowing
Rock to perform.
You could call us an Atlanta band, happily playing in
the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, Dreyfuss said.
The sheer beauty of the area is part of the attraction
for us to play there.
The bands first appearance in Blowing Rock last January
solidified Dreyfusss opinion of the music-loving mountain
people of the High Country. When guitarist Boyes had to have
emergency bypass heart surgery the night before the show, Bart
Conway of Canyons made a few phone calls and recruited guitarist
David Brewer to fill in for him.
Only through some last minute arrangements to utilize
some local musicians were we able to pull off our first weekend,
Dreyfuss said. The owner of Canyons has been kind enough
to give us this second chance, and we hope it will not be our
last.
The Gone Bananas set-list features songs by the Grateful Dead,
Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones,
Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, the Doors, the Beatles and other stalwarts
of 60s and 70s rock and roll.
