Summer at Sugar Mountain Resort
Seasonal activities now under way

Sugar Mountain Resort’s summer season began May 1, with the opening of the areas hiking and biking trails, and will conclude on Oct. 11, following the 19th annual Oktoberfest celebration.

Miles of hiking and biking trails intertwine throughout the village of Sugar Mountain and are accessible from many points throughout the village of Sugar Mountain and Sugar Mountain Resort.

Daily trail access is free of charge May through October from dawn until dusk. Trail maps are available online at www.skisugar.com/liftrides and in a mailbox located at the base of Sugar Mountain’s Flying Mile slope or when purchasing a lift ride ticket at the bottom of the Gray lift station.

Trails are constantly being maintained, but people are urged to be cautious, as weather and other variables can change the condition of any trail. While riding a bike within the village limits, helmets are required. Scenic chairlift rides to Sugar’s 5,300-foot peak run Friday, July 3, through Sunday, Sept. 6, and operate every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

“Bring the whole family, a picnic lunch, your mountain bike, a friend and enjoy a breathtaking 45 minute roundtrip lift-ride,” a Sugar Mountain spokesperson said. “The majestic scenery is extraordinary.”

For mountain bikers, special hooks mounted on the back of the Gray lift-chairs carry bikes to the top of Sugar Mountain.Lift ticket prices are $10 for a one-time round trip ride and $22 for an all-day ticket. Kids 4 and under ride free with a ticketed adult. Groups of 20 or more may purchase one-time ride tickets for $5. Advanced reservations are required for group rates. For group reservations, call (828) 898-4521, ext. 261.

Sugar’s 19th annual Oktoberfest is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10 and 11, a two-day event. The weekend is packed with activities from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. On-mountain lodging specials are available, and festival admission and parking are free. Applications for vendor participation and volunteers are now being accepted.

The village of Sugar Mountain also has six fast dry-clay tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course.
