Tickets are now on sale for Wilkes Playmakers’ production of Moonshine & Thunder - The Junior Johnson Story.  Performances are at 7:30 p.m. each evening and show dates are October 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The show will be presented outdoors at The Forest Edge Amphitheatre on Hwy 421 N in Fort Hamby Park. The park will open to audience members each evening at 6:30 p.m. The 850-seat Amphitheatre has comfortable molded chairs and coffee ham biscuits and other concessions will be sold.  Everyone attending is encouraged to dress as if you are going to a football game - warms clothes, blankets, etc.

Moonshine and Thunder - The Junior Johnson Story covers the early moonshine and racing career of NASCAR legend, Junior Johnson up to his big super speedway win in 1960 at the Daytona 500. The story is told with a mixture of live onstage performances by local actors, filmed performances by local actors on a large screen and actual racing footage from The NASCAR Archives as well as from Enoch Staleys personal collection - courtesy of his son, Mike Staley.

Directed by Karen Reynolds, with a musical soundtrack by David Johnson and filmed sequences by Mule Ferguson - the show is a multi media event - with a multitude of eye candy for theatre-goers and race fans. There’s a 1940 Ford Coupe, and a 1939 Ford Pick Up Truck - courtesy of Willie Clay Call.  There’s a bagpipe player, moonshine stills, explosions, a semi streaker, a crazy woman with a shotgun and a fast paced story that revolves around one of Wilkes County’s true legends.

Moonshine & Thunder - The Junior Johnson Story is produced through a partnership with The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

All tickets are $15 with group rates available for groups of 10 or more upon request.  There is also a gas saver special given upon request ($3 off the ticket price of $15) if the ticket buyer can produce a current driver’s license showing their current address to prove they drove more than sixty miles to the Amphitheatre.

Tickets may be purchased by calling 336-838-7529, ordering online at www.wilkesplaymakers.com or by dropping by the Box Office at Benton Hall, 300 D Street, North Wilkesboro, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the guard house entering Fort Hamby Park on the nights of each show one hour prior to each performance. Mastercard and Visa are accepted.

Watauga County night will be Friday, October 3rd.  Watauga County audience members may purchase their tickets on this night for $10 each (again, this discount will be given if you present a current driver’s license showing that you are a Watauga County resident).
