Jim Crompton to give art workshop in May
Carlton Gallery explores the creative process

Carlton Gallery is exhibiting the fine art of renowned oil painter and instructor, Jim Crompton. Crompton moved to the High Country from Florida where he taught painting and exhibited in numerous galleries. However, his love of the mountains brought him to North Carolina where his life is in art.

Crompton’s love of painting shows in his diverse selection of subject matter. Crompton says “I have no favorite subject. Every painting is exciting for me. I do not allow the subject matter to dictate because with color, bold strokes, and paint thickness every painting is a creative process”. A major key to Crompton’s art is the way he organizes his paintings. First the mood and composition of the painting is determined abstractly through color, then, the basic forms are created with bold strokes of paint. Finally, using a series of glazes and fine brushwork, his paintings are brought to a conclusion. Crompton’s works of art at Carlton Gallery include musicians, southwestern horsemen, market scenes, local landscapes, and portraits.

Crompton currently teaches painting workshops at Carlton Gallery. His influential teaching methods have helped shape the styles and careers of some of the gallery artists including Toni Carlton, Eloise Pope, Louise Pinto and Joyce Norwood. His workshops are very popular among many of the area’s local artists who find his instruction helpful and inspirational in their quest to become better artists.

The “Portrait in Sculpture and Painting“ workshop with Jim Crompton in May is what he taught for many years at his art school in Florida. Making a clay head sculpture is beneficial in teaching one to think three dimensional. By utilizing six basic steps in sculpting a head with all features in proportion on an armature, the actual painting portraiture on canvas becomes much easier. This workshop is a two part series – Clay Head Sculpture on May 5, 6, and 7 and Portrait Painting on May 19, 20, and 21. Participation in this workshop can be separate or combined. Crompton’s “Creative Paintings from Photographs” workshops in June through October will concentrate on teaching the four steps of painting: drawing, color, form and detail.

Visit Carlton Gallery to view the diverse collection of oils on canvas by Jim Crompton. Gallery early Spring hours are 11:00 – 5:00 Monday through Saturday and 1:00 – 5:00 on Sunday.
