Salvation Army thrift store mobilizes
The Salvation Army’s Boone thrift store will be relocating to a spot behind the post office on Blowing Rock Road from its current location at 2422 U.S. 321.

Glenda Canite, production supervisor for the Salvation Army, said the organization is expecting to open its new location in early March.

Canite said the maintenance issues of the current facility make the move a good one for the organization as they work to serve residents of the region. She said thrift stores can be important resources to many families.
“People will not always pay full price for merchandise in some of the stores, and they can get like new or gently used items for a fraction of the price at the thrift store,” Canite said.

Individuals interested in donating items can bring their donations to the new location once it is open. The Salvation Army also offers a pick-up service for large items, such as furniture. All donations are tax deductible.

Thrift stores, in general, are beneficial to communities in that they offer an easy means of reusing and recycling unwanted goods that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

“I think it’s nice to be able to donate items to a charity so the proceeds can help the needy, wherever they may be,” Canite said.

Proceeds from the Salvation Army thrift store go to support the various charitable efforts of the organization, including the Boys and Girls Club and homeless shelters. Locally, the Salvation Army offers a social worker to serve those in the community in need of social services.

On a national and international level, the Salvation Army’s services include disaster relief, AIDS education, medical facilities and services for the aging and battered women. Each year, more than 30 million people are aided in some form by this organization.
