The classes hosted a Readers Theater, where they read various
poems and other readings in order to demonstrate their reading
skills and gain confidence in their abilities.
The point is not to memorize, second grade teacher
Diane Holder said. The point is to read. Were trying
to help them improve their fluency and comprehension.
The classes readings focused on perhaps the countrys
two most well-known presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
They read poems dedicated to the presidents and imaginary interviews
with the two historical figures discussing the facts and myths
about their lives.
In addition to improving the students reading skills, third
grade teacher Virginia Spainhour said the program promotes community
involvement and parent involvement.
A child learns more from their parents that from teachers,
she said. If parents are involved, children tend to be more
excited about learning.
Wanda Hamilton, a parent helping with the event, said she to saw
the importance in parent involvement. To me, thats
a big part of how they do in school, she said.
Hamiltons son, Zachary, who is in the third grade, said
he enjoyed coming to Deerfield Ridge. I liked it because
it was fun telling the residents about the presidents, he
said.
Garrett Blakeley, a second grade student, said he especially liked
learning stories about the presidents, like the tale of George
Washington cutting down the cherry tree.
