Houston seeks re-election

Jeanie Houston has announced plans to continue serving the people of North Carolina's 23rd Judicial District
by seeking re-election as a district court judge, a position she has held for more than 10 years. This will be her fourth term in the 23rd Judicial District, which consists of Wilkes, Yadkin, Ashe and Alleghany counties in Northwest North Carolina.

"For more than a decade now, I have been a fair and impartial judge," Houston said. "I enjoy working with the people of this district, and look forward to doing so for many years to come."

The former Jeanie Reavis is a 1984 graduate of Western Carolina University and a 1987 graduate of Campbell University School of Law. She began her legal career as an associate attorney with Zachary & Zachary Law Of-fices in Yadkinville, and in March 1989 began work as an assistant district attorney in the 23rd Judicial District.

Houston worked in that office until being appointed to her current position as district court judge by North Caro-lina Governor Jim Hunt in August 1997. In 2000 and 2004, she was elected to the seat.

A native of Hamptonville, Houston has been a member of the North Carolina State Bar since 1987 and a member of the North Carolina District Court Judge's Association since 1997. She is currently active in the Criminal Jus-tice Partnership Committee and the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Houston also takes part in trial court training for Wilkes Community College's Basic Law Enforcement classes, and is a regular speaker at Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) and Child Abuse Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) graduations throughout the 23rd Judicial District. She was a founding member of the Yadkin County MADD chapter.

Houston is a past member of the Domestic Violence Advisory Council and United Way Allocation Committee. She served as a girl's softball coach at West Yadkin Elementary School for several years.

Her husband, Rick Houston, is a freelance writer with several NASCAR and Christian publications. They have twin seven-year-old sons, Adam and Jesse. She is also the stepmother of Richard Houston of Nashville, Tenn. The Houstons are members of Maplewood Baptist Church in Yadkinville, where she is a children's Sunday School teacher and member of the church council.
