The annual lineup of performers scheduled to appear at An Appalachian Summer Festival is always varied and diverse. This year that diversity is even, well, more diverse than usual.

Appalachian State University’s Office of Cultural Affairs has been hard at work putting together a festival that features dance, concerts, dramatic works and visual arts presentation that will offer something for everyone. The preliminary list of performers includes the Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra, Andre Watts, the Broyhill Chamber Orchestra, classical violinist Midori, Triad Stage, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Judy Collins, the Reduced Shakespeare Company, Cherish the Ladies, Doug Varone and Dancers, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and the Charlie Daniels Band.

Visual arts presentations include the 23rd Annual Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition, the Visual Arts Workshop Series, and the Turchin Center exhibition Dancing with the Dragon: Contemporary Art from Bejing.

One new feature of this year’s An Appalachian Summer Festival will be a film festival. The Wild and Scenic Film Festival should offer fans of exotic locales and outdoor adventure something similar to ASU’s annual Banff Mountain Film Festival.

Slated to perform at the festival’s closing Outdoor Fireworks Concert at Kidd Brewer Stadium, Charlie Daniels is the latest performer to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. He was inducted in a ceremony on January 19th conducted by Opry members Marty Stuart and Connie Smith.

Daniels’ hits include “Uneasy Rider,” “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Do It Again.”

This year Sony Classical recording artist Midori will celebrate her 25th year of performing before the public. She had her United States debut at the age of 11 with conductor Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic.

Over the past quarter century, the celebrated violinist has performed with Leonard Bernstein, Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman, among many others.

Midori is also the founder of the non-profit organization Midori & Friends that provides music instruction, workshops and concerts to children who might otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy classical music. The foundation is now partnered with the New York public school system.

Midori will perform with the Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra when she appears at An Appalachian Summer.

Ticket information and a complete schedule of An Appalachian Summer performances will be available soon at www.appsummer.org.
