Turchin Center hosts Art Workshops in October

Events held in conjunction with Print Dialogue Days

Grab your lunch, bottled water and an hour and join Appalachian State University faculty and Turchin Center for the Visual Arts staff for an adventure in art. Lunch and Learn is a series of programs providing opportunities to learn more about the work in current TCVA exhibitions or related subjects. It’s informal and a fun, friendly way to explore art. Programs begin in the TCVA’s Lecture Hall, ground floor, West Wing. Check at the front desk for directions. The October Lunch and Learns are:

October 17, noon-1pm: Multiplicity and Originality — What is an original print?
Join Department of Art faculty member April Flanders as she discusses the concept of an original print. In addition, she will talk about the different processes used by printmakers. The prints included in the Mayer Gallery Exhibition Prints! Pow! Wow! A Conversation in Print will serve as a reference for the discussion. This lecture and the exhibition support Print Dialogue Days, a symposium hosted by the printmaking area of Appalachian’s Department of Art.

October 31, noon-1pm: Mel Stanforth: These Folks Ain’t Company
Join students from the Department of Art’s Visual Arts Guide course for a look at the work of Mel Stanforth who taught at East Carolina University from 1969 until 2001. Stanforth has earned acclaim both as a teacher and as an artist, and inspired numerous young artists over the last three decades…. He continues to inspire.
The TCVA also features My Time with Magritte — Suzi Gablik, October 4, at 6:30pm, in the Turchin Center Lecture Hall, West Wing. Acclaimed art critic and author Suzi Gablik reads from her most recent autobiographical book Living the Magical Life: An Oracular Adventure. This engaging memoir offers a glimpse into her life and work, including eight months living with acclaimed surrealist artist Rene Magritte and his wife. After the reading, Gablik participates in an informal discussion related to her time spent in the Magritte household. This program supports the Department of Theatre and Dance production This is Not a Pipe Dream.
For a complete schedule of programs for children, teenagers, adults, seniors and special populations, including Lunch and Learns, please call 828/262-3017 or visit www.tcva.org.
