‘Daisy’s’ blooms in Schaefer Center
Boone becomes the latest stop for the screening of filmmaker
Ciera Parrack’s directorial debut, “Daisy’s.”
The screening, which is free to the public, will be held on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University.
Parrack, who currently resides in California, said the decision to screen the movie in the High Country came from a recommendation of a mutual friend and a desire to film a future feature in the area.
“I’ve always loved the South and its taste of life and charm,” said Parrack, who plays the leading role, Daisy.
The film, which was also written by Parrack, is about a young woman hitchhiking to Nashville, Tenn., in hopes of becoming a musical sensation.
“It’s a story about how she finds true love and herself,” Parrack said.
In writing the film, Parrack said she was searching for answers to some of life’s questions. She hopes the film gives the audience a similar feeling of comfort.
“I would hope they would find some peace in their hearts and understanding of how brutal life can feel ... but there is always hope,” Parrack said. “There’s a force of love always available to us. I hope people, especially dreamers or artists, realize that anything is possible. We did this film with literally nothing and turned it into a miracle.”
The movie was filmed in a small Arkansas town, which is home to one of Parrack’s fellow cast members.
“We knew we would be welcomed there,” Parrack said. “It’s the type of town where people would give you the shirt off their back.”
Parrack noted the challenges of directing a film instead of her previous roles as an actor.
“Holding space for an entire cast and being able to give them everything they need … that was the most challenging and rewarding thing,” Parrack said.
In choosing Boone as a screening location, Parrack also saw it as an opportunity to raise additional funds for future films and to partner with local nonprofit organization Wine to Water.
The Jan. 27 screening of “Daisy’s” is free, and there will be a question-and-answer session afterward, featuring Parrack and fellow cast members Billy Joe Shaver (“The Apostle”), Jim Parrack (HBO’s “True Blood”), Jennifer Black (“Harvest Moon”) and Andrea Dantas (“Screamplay”).
About the Director
Parrack said she “always wanted to act.”
“I took theater in school and fell in love with it,” she said. “I was blessed enough to go to Playhouse West in Hollywood. I just grew there as an artist. From there, I couldn’t stop.”
