ASU hosts ‘Day After Peace’ screening
Appalachian State University’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust and
Peace Studies will host a screening of ‘The Day After Peace’ on Sunday, Sept. 23.
The film
will be shown at 3 p.m. in Room 114 of Belk Library to commemorate the International Day of Peace.
“The Day After Peace” documents the efforts of Jeremy Gilley to establish a worldwide
ceasefire one day a year. As a result, he convinced the members of the United Nations General
Assembly to set aside Sept. 21 as the day for that ceasefire. The film features Jude Law, Kofi
Annan, Angelina Jolie, Annie Lennox, the Dalai Lama and Jonny Lee Miller.
A panel discussion
will follow the film. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
Appalachian State University’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies was founded in
2002 to develop new educational opportunities for students, teachers and the community. Located
administratively within the College of Arts and Sciences, the center seeks to strengthen tolerance,
understanding and remembrance by increasing the knowledge of Jewish culture and history, teaching
the history and meaning of the Holocaust and using these experiences to explore peaceful avenues for
human improvement and the prevention of future genocides.
