1930

Federal Bureau of Narcotics formed

Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes stories, died

Bobby Jones won the grand slam in golf, capturing the British Open, U.S. Amateur, British Amateur, and U.S. Open titles.

1931

Depression sweeps worldwide, leading to closing of all German banks

Al "Scarface" Capone jailed for income tax evasion

the Benguella-Katanga, Africa's first cross-continental railroad line, completed

Empire State Building, then tallest in the world, completed.

1932

Franklin Roosevelt has landslide victory in presidential elections

Stalin announces Second Five Year Plan in Soviet Union

Hindenburg defeats Hitler in German presidential elections, but Nazis take control of the Parliament

17,000 impoverished veterans march on Washington, seeking promised government bonuses - current soldiers are used to drive them out.

1933

U.S. Court allows James Joyce's controversial "Ulysses" to be sold in the United States

Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany

Frances Perkins, new U.S. Secretary of Labor, becomes first female cabinet member

Boycott of Jews begins in Germany.

1934

Stalin begins purge of Communist Party

Sophia Loren born

Future heavyweight champ Joe Louis, the Bronx Bomber, wins his first fight.

1935

Colorful, controversial Louisiana politician Huey "Kingfish" Long assassinated

longest bridge in the world opened over the Zambesi River

Alcoholics Anonymous organized in New York

First practical radar invented by Robert Watson Watt of England

George Gershwin writes his folk opera "Porgy and Bess."

1936

King George V of England dies, and is succeeded by his son, Edward VIII, who abdicates for "the woman I love" and is succeeded by his brother, George VI

Bruno Richard Hauptman convicted of kidnapping and killing Lindbergh baby

China declares war on Japan

The Queen Mary crosses the Atlantic in three days, 23 hours and 57 minutes

U.S. population: 127 million.

1937

Radio broadcast of King George VI's coronation is the first worldwide program heard in the U.S.

Japanese troops seize Beijing and other major Chinese cities

Amelia Earhart disappears over the Pacific

New York Yankees win the "Subway Series," defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers four games to one.

1938

German troops enter Austria and Czechoslovakia

20,000 television sets reported in service, all around New York City

40-hour work week becomes norm in U.S.

Tennis star Don Budge wins Grand Slam, capturing all four major titles.

1939

Germany invades Poland

World War II begins as France and England declare war on Germany

U.S. economy booms from orders for military supplies from other nations

First televised baseball game

"Gone With The Wind" wins Academy Award

"Wizard of Oz" starring Judy Garland released

John Steinbeck writes The Grapes of Wrath.
