Watauga Helps Its Own

The Watauga County Chapter of American Red Cross has teamed up with Boone's ReelHouse Cinema & Draft to produce an entertaining event that encourages local residents to assist their own neighbors. Watauga Helps Its Own, a dinner theater-style presentation of live music, great food and inspirational film shorts, will be held at the ReelHouse on Tuesday, May 4.

According to Emily Watkins, Red Cross's local director of public relations, "Watauga County's outpouring of support in response to the earthquake tragedy in Haiti has been touching and incredibly generous. However, funds for our local Red Cross Chapter have suffered. The Watauga County Red Cross is proud to partner with the ReelHouse to provide a night of food and entertainment, while raising funds that will stay here in Watauga County to support the needs of our neighbors."

Those local needs are quite varied as, in the past year alone, Watauga Red Cross has responded to 21 local disasters, including 16 residential fires. They've trained more than 2,500 individuals in lifeguard, CPR, AED and First Aid classes, they've run 70 blood drives (collecting more than 4,500 pints of blood), and they've provided emergency connections for 20 local military families.

Once taking their comfortable seat at a cloth-covered dining table, each attendee of Watauga Helps Its Own will enjoy live acoustic music, and they'll have the opportunity to order dinner from the ReelHouse's wide variety of appetizers, sandwiches, salads and pizza. On the restaurant and theater's 32-foot screen, during the band's set breaks, the Red Cross will show several short films detailing how donors' contributions are put to work in their local communities.

ReelHouse director of entertainment and special events Walt Reis said his venue would like to work with the Red Cross on a regular basis. "Provided the community supports our efforts to help folks right here in Watauga County, the ReelHouse would love to make this a monthly event," he said.

Watauga Helps Its Own will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, at the ReelHouse Cinema & Draft, located at 215 Boone Heights Drive. Admission is $10, and patrons will receive a separate dinner bill. All door proceeds will go directly toward local Red Cross efforts within Watauga County.
