Walk for Awareness Sept. 6 at ASU
Walk for Awareness, the annual anti-violence and safety
awareness walk at Appalachian State University, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 9 p.m.
on Sanford Mall on campus.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Mountaineer Baseball
coach Chris Pollard.
The video "Why Walk? A Survivor's Story" will be shown prior to the Walk
for Awareness beginning at 8 p.m. Belk Library and Information Commons Room 114.
Now in
its 22nd year, the Walk for Awareness began in 1989 following the abduction and murder of a
university employee. It serves as a reminder to campus and community members alike of the importance
of personal safety. It also commemorates lives lost to violence, supports victims and survivors of
violence, and serves as a collective moment of empowerment.
Walk for Awareness is being held
in conjunction with Appalachian's Safety Day on Sept. 7, which will include information tables on
Sanford Mall that will offer relationship, personal and psychological, public and food safety
information. Visit http://www.news.appstate.edu/2011/08/23/safetyappstate for more details.
The Walk
for Awareness is sponsored by Appalachian's Office of the Dean of Students Office, Multicultural
Student Development, Counseling and Psychological Services and Women's Center, and the Appalachian
Parents Association and University Highlands.
