In honor of National Tourism Week, Wahoo's Adventures will be hosting a free networking event to bring tourism trades together in the High Country.

Blues, Brews BBQ and Canoes will be held May 19 at Wahoo's outpost on the New River. All tourism-based industries are invited to set an information booth, free of charge. The event will be open to all front-line employees, including hotel front desk and restaurant wait staff, of the tourism trade to learn more about what is available in the High Country.

Wahoo's owner Jeff Stanley said he is organizing the event as a means to connect the tourism trades to create a co-op of likeminded advertisers to get the word out on what is available in the area.

The networking event will be free of charge, both for participating hotels, restaurants, attractions, chamber of commerce organizations, retailers and other businesses interested in setting up a booth, and day-of attendees.

Stanley encourages booth operators to bring a sample of their food, merchandise or other information to share with the front-line employees who attend.

"When someone, say a waiter in a local restaurant, is asked by a tourist 'what else is there to do here?' that employee would knowledgeable about area attractions," Stanley said.

In addition, local musicians are encouraged to attend to showcase their talents to the area businesses that frequently host live music. Stanley is personally seeking traditional bluegrass musicians for Wahoo's upcoming seasonal events, though all styles of musicians are welcome.

On May 19, the employees of local tourism-based businesses will be invited to attend the event, kicking off at 11 a.m. with canoe, kayak and tube rides provided by Wahoo's on the New River.

Following the river trip, those front-line employees will be treated to free dinner, beer and live music at the outpost, while networking and browsing the booths until 7 p.m.

"The event is free, so that businesses on a budget can participate and send their employees," Stanley said. "It is also an upfront thank you for all the employees do on the front line and to show them how much we, as tourism operators, value their support."

Businesses are asked to RSVP for booth space by May 17. For more information call Wahoo's at (828) 262-5774.
