Touring bassist hits Espresso News
C.J. Boyd. For a week, he'll call Boone his home.
"I've been on tour for the past two and half years," he said.
To Boyd, home is a suitcase and a bass guitar.
"Touring is like a way of life to me," he said. "It's a state of mind. It doesn't drive me insane ... I tend to try to just be adaptable."
But life on the road has its own burdens.
"I'm not married, let's put it that way," he laughed. "I have a lot of really close friends who are spread out, so I see them more often than I would if I was in one place."
Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 9 p.m., he's hoping to make some new friends as he plays a show at Espresso News with Red Snapper Family Band (myspace.com/hukkaberry).
"It's all centered around bass guitar and double bass," he said of his solo act. "It's a lot of layers."
And he's been doing it a long time.
"I feel like I started playing music in high school and was just listening to rock bands at the time and was into that and, as I started to expand my musical horizons, I just started writing more for bass," he said.
And Boone is a special place to Boyd, who spent a month here last winter.
"I have a lot of friends there," he said.
He plans to stay a week before moving on to places like Asheville, Chapel Hill and Charlotte. Boyd, whose tours have taken him throughout Western Europe and every state of the continental U.S., plays mainly instrumental music, "but there is some singing."
Does he plan to settle down any time soon?
"Um, no," he said. "Definitely not."
