Live music, storytelling and homemade meals - it's summertime in Todd.
This Friday, the Todd General Store is kicking off its summer concert series with live bluegrass from Amantha Mill, and much more to follow.
Scheduled every Friday night from July 1 through Thanksgiving, the concerts showcase area bands and invite residents and visitors to enjoy a sampling of local bluegrass.
Area favorites Amantha Mill will perform the first Friday of each month, Creekside Grass the second Friday, Backporch Bluegrass the third, The Neighbors the fourth and Sweetbriar Jam on the fifth.
"And it's all in the store," Todd General Store's Gini Mann said. "It's a gathering of locals and tourists in a fun and friendly atmosphere."
And Mann would know. She's worked with the store for 10 years, while the concerts are now entering their 20th.
"Generally, all of (the bands) have been playing here for several years," she said. "And it's something (visitors) like to come back to. Everybody has a favorite band that they come to see. Some people come every week."
The music starts at 7 p.m. on Fridays, but not before Mann's home-cooked dinner is served. And she was more than happy to share the menu.
"I do things like roast pork loin, baked apples, mashed sweet potatoes, homemade meatloaf, apricot-stuffed pork chops, Cajun chicken with beans and rice," she said.
Dinner runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and the store's regular menu is also available.
Music and home-cooking aside, the Todd General Store also offers weekly storytelling every Tuesday through October at 6 p.m., with popular storytellers like Charlotte Ross, Orville Hicks, Rhody Jane Meadows, Sherry Boone and Dianne Hackworth dropping by to spin a yarn.
The Todd General Store, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located at 3866 Railroad Grade Road, 11 miles north of Boone and 11 miles south of West Jefferson, off N.C. 194 at the Todd Fire Department.
