Thievin', Pickin' & Fishin'
Teaming again with wife Jenny and folk virtuoso Keller Williams, renowned flatpicking guitarist Larry Keel is preparing for the release of a new album, Keller and the Keels' Thief, due in May.
"It's a bunch of unique cover tunes that Keller has picked out that we've rehearsed well, got 'em all down," Keel said. "But it's interesting to me, because I didn't even know a lot of them. Keller was like, 'Well, they're No. 1 hits.'
"It's always fascinating to me to learn them and put our touch on them, and then walk in front of a big crowd where all the kids are singing every word to every song, and I'm like, 'Well, I guess I'm the odd man out.' But that's what keeps it fresh, you know. We're extremely proud of that record, and we're looking forward to everybody laying their ears on it."
Keller and the Keels then plan to hit the tour circuit, hitting major festivals like Telluride and Allgood, before Larry Keel and Natural Bridge return to Boone's own Music on the Mountaintop in August.
Keel's also added a new component to his website, casting out his love of fishing to fans and fishermen alike. Called "Fishin' and Pickin'," the new site features a bragging board, where fans can submit pictures of their favorite catches, be it fish, live music or a unique combination of the two.
"It features all things fishin' and pickin', because that's what I like to do," said Keel, who's planning to shoot a pilot episode for a television series based on the same concept.
The series would showcase fishing in various locales throughout the states, with host Keel taking time out to pick with area musicians. "Just a little bit of both and a whole lot of fun, for sure," he said.
