School’s out, but the Turchin Center’s in session.

This summer, Appalachian State University’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is offering a series of children’s arts workshops.

With topics ranging from self-portraits to action figures to design, the workshops are open to children of all ages.

“Participants experience the creative energy of being in a community focused on art making, being around other students who are engaged with the materials, willing to take risks and discover the ‘what ifs,’” said Pegge Laine, who heads the TCVA’s Education Outreach program. “While students are introduced to new skills, these workshops are geared to process rather than product, to experiencing color, texture and design in new and exciting ways.”

The instructors who guide them hold art degrees and hail from the world over, Laine said, noting that many have worked as art teachers in public schools and universities.

“They have also have served as artists in residence throughout the Southeast and teach privately in their studios, possessing both artistic skill and a desire to enhance the creative process in children,” she said.

The Turchin Center has offered the workshops since it first opened in 2003, Laine said, adding that space is still available in this summer’s lineup. For more information, including registration and pricing, visit http://www.tcva.org/calendar/super/id/947. To register, call( 828) 262-3017. All workshops will be held in classroom 3200 of the Turchin Center, and all supplies are included with the registration fee.

The Turchin Center is located at 423 W. King St. in downtown Boone. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Friday. The center is closed Sunday and Monday and observes all university holidays. There is no admission charge, although donations are accepted. For more information, call (828) 262-3017, or visit http://www.tcva.org.
