High Country Writers welcomes back one of its own — award-winning science-fiction author Hugh Howey.
Howey will be speaking at HCW’s Aug. 8 meeting at the Watauga County Library in Boone, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Howey’s is a success story that surpasses most. In 2011, at the age of 36, Howey self-published a sci-fi novella, “Wool,” about an underground world created following an apocalyptic event. It sold a half-million copies before ever seeing a printed page and became the No. 1 bestseller in science fiction on Amazon.com.
Since then, movie rights have been bought up by Hollywood’s Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian. Random House published a hardcover edition in the UK in January 2013. Howey, however, has managed to retain the eBook rights.
This character-driven series has morphed into eight books, found in two omnibus collections, called “The Silo Saga” and “Shift,” respectively, and the final book of the series, “Dust.” The first book, “Wool,” can be downloaded on Amazon as an eBook at no charge.
Howey has another award-winning series, called “The Bern Saga,” about a young female protagonist who was expelled from the Flight Academy. She recovers her father’s old starship, and the adventure begins.
All of Howey’s books, including several stand-alone volumes, can be purchased at Amazon.com. He also has seven short stories, which can be found on his site, http://www.hughhowey.com,
When he isn’t writing, Howey likes to hike with his family, read and walk on the beach. He currently lives in Jupiter, Fla., with his wife, Amber, and their dog, Bella.
