Rollin’ for Funds
The Appalachian Rollergirls are hosting a fundraiser at Canyons on Feb. 8.
The Appalachian Rollergirls, Boone’s only women’s flat track
roller derby team, will host a fundraiser at Canyons Restaurant & Bar in Blowing Rock Feb. 8,
from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event will help raise money to pay for a roller derby track to host
games at the Holmes M. Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University.
Canyons will donate 10 percent of all receipts between 5 and 8 p.m. directly to the
Appalachian Rollergirls.
Members of the team will be on hand at Canyons selling merchandise
and signing autographs for fans.
ARG purchased the floor last spring and is close to paying
off the remainder of the bank note.
“We’re hoping to pay the
track off before our first home bout at the Convocation Center on April 28,” said Jennifer Pillow,
the league president. “These bouts bring upwards of 1,500 people to the area and are a definite
boost to our local economy.”
ARG is a nonprofit organization and donates a portion ofits
ticket sales to other local charities.
OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and
Shelter) and Blowing Rock CARES were beneficiaries of the team in 2011.
