Red Cross hosts April blood drives
According to the American Red Cross, some 38 percent of
Americans are eligible to donate blood.
Yet only 3 percent actually do so.
As such, the Red Cross is encouraging regular donors and newcomers alike to help save lives.
“While only about 3 percent of the population donates blood, many of us will need blood at some point in our lifetime,” said Sharon Pitt, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. “The Red Cross relies on volunteer donors to meet the needs of patients who depend on transfusions. It is important that our donors realize the impact they have on the lives of so many.”
To boost participation and, in turn, blood supply, the Red Cross will host numerous blood drives in Watauga and Avery counties throughout April. The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, April 1, 1:30 to 6 p.m. at Holiday Inn Express (1943 Blowing Rock Road, Boone), sponsored by Sunrise Rotary. For an appointment, call (336) 416-4016.

According to the Red Cross, the Carolinas Blood Services Region provides blood to patients in 103 hospitals. To meet the demand, approximately1,600 people would need to give blood or platelets each weekday. The Red Cross notes that blood can be safely donated every 56 days, while platelets can be given every seven days up to 24 times a year.
