When it comes to charity, this is a driving force.

The fifth annual Casa Rustica Charity Golf Tournament returns to the High Country Thursday, Aug. 25, with proceeds benefiting Blowing Rock CARES, an organization that provides basic necessities to families in need.

Last year's tournament raised $15,000 for two local families, and Casa Rustica restaurant owner and event organizer Rick Pedroni aims to do so again. "That's pretty big for a one-afternoon event, you know?" he said.

The goal is big, but doable. More than that, it's practical.

"The amount of support we've had locally through businesses, food purveyors - just everybody and anybody has been really great," Pedroni said. "I think it really helps that everyone wants to help people locally, and that's one thing that's been very successful for us. We're giving it back to the community, and it's not going away from here. It stays in Watauga County."

Held at RedTail Mountain, just across the Tennessee border in Mountain City, the tournament is already filled to the tee, though Pedroni said some sponsorships are still available.
"The biggest thing is everyone just has a blast," he said.

Apart from actual tournament play, Pedroni said other activities and games abound. For instance, people can test their luck against local golf pros. Should their drive come up short, they can always try for a hole in one with the raffle, featuring thousands of dollars worth of giveaways, including golf clubs, golf bags, golf games, vacations, a one-year membership to RedTail Mountain's course and a plethora of gift cards to area restaurants.

And it wouldn't be the Casa Rustica Charity Golf Tournament if Casa Rustica didn't provide dinner. "It's just kind of taken off," Pedroni said.

The charity fundraiser started off in 2005 as a relief effort for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"It was so successful and we had such great support that we wanted to try and create a regular event," Pedroni said. "My wife and I are both golfers, so what better to do than a golf tournament?"
Apparently, the feeling was mutual.

Registration for the Casa Rustica Charity Golf Tournament opens at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at RedTail Mountain, located at 300 Clubhouse Lane in Mountain City, Tenn.
