Paws for a Cause
A May 24 fundraiser is giving shelter dogs something to wag
their tails about. Paws for a Cause is an upcoming fundraising event to benefit the Avery County
“All funds raised will go to support our local animals, the shelter and its programs,” an Avery County Humane Society spokesperson said. “Because the Humane Society receives no local or national financial support, (we) are constantly looking for new sources of revenue.”
According to the organization, private donations, special events and adoption fees cover more than 90% of the cost of caring for the hundreds of animals each year. The ACHS is the only facility in Avery County that takes in animals in need. In 2013, the ACHS helped place nearly 800 dogs, cats and other animals in loving homes all across the High Country.
In addition to adoptions, the ACHS has programs including low cost shot clinics, low-cost spay and neuter services, the “Leash on Life” program and community outreach and education programs.
Paws for a Cause will take place May 24. Participants will have the option to raise funds in several different ways: by paying a registration fee to run in a 5K with or without their dogs, or by getting sponsorships to walk with their friends and pets in the Doggie Fun Walk. Both events start at the Avery County Humane Society, located at 279 Vale Road in Newland.
Shelters dogs can be provided for those without a dog and who wish to run or walk with one. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers, as well as top female and male finishers in the 5K. Runners will also have the option to stick around after the race and join in on the Doggie Fun Walk. All well-behaved dogs are welcome, although owners should use their discretion to determine if their dog plays well with others. All dogs must be on a leash at all times.
All participants must be 18 years of age or have the signature of a parent or guardian. Food, refreshments and entertainment will be available.
Runners and walkers can sign up at: http://runsignup.com/Race/NC/Newland/PawsForACause. When registering, applicants will have the opportunity to set up their own fund raising page and are encouraged to invite friends and family to join in raising money for the cause.
Registration and fundraising forms are also available at the Avery County Humane Society. For more information, visit http://www.averyhumane.org/catalog/dogrun.php, or email (PawsForACauseAvery@gmail.com)
