Naked Gods at Boone Saloon Monday
They've got a sense of humor. That much is obvious.
"I like to bowl," Derek Wycoff said.
"No you don't," Chris Hutelmyer said.
They're just a couple of hometown guys, after all.
"We all moved up here to go to school," Wycoff said.
He's from Hildebrand, just over an hour down the mountain.
Derek Wycoff, Chris Hutelmyer, Seth Sullivan, Brian Knox and Christian Smith.
They're just your average Boonies. Most of them have known each other since high school.
They've got day jobs (look for Sullivan at the Boone Saloon) and families (an extremely affectionate basset hound). They like kicking back on a grassy yard on a May afternoon.
Oh, and they also like to play music. They really, really like to play music.
"It's burly pop mountain rock," Sullivan said.
And you have to hear it.
With catchy, soulful tunes like "Mountain Smashing Song of Joy," they're the Naked Gods, a Boone-based band, and next Monday, they'll return to Boone Saloon.
Playing music is what they've always done, and, while the guys have day jobs, musicians are what they plan to be forever.
"That or an astronaut," Wycoff said. "I haven't decided yet."
What sets them apart? Part of it's the process. Their original Neil Young-esque songs aren't just a one-man operation.
"A couple of us will get down with acoustic guitars ... it's pretty democratic," Wycoff said.
Part of it's that aforementioned sense of humor.
"Brian's a robot," Sullivan said.
An even bigger part however, is their friendship.
"Even if we didn't play music, we'd all be friends," Wycoff said.
After all, they're the Naked Gods.
"The name's just something that kind of came out of a show," Sullivan said. "The guy at the show asked me what we were called and I said the Naked Gods."
Three years and numerous shows later, there's no going back now.
"Our shows are like giant parties," Sullivan said.
And you're invited.
What better way to celebrate the end of the school year?
On Monday, May 17, they'll be joined by the Givers and Red Snapper in a show presented by 641rpm. It all happens at the Boone Saloon, located at 489 W. King St. in downtown Boone.
Can't make it Monday? On June 30, the boys will be back at Boone Saloon.
