Take a musical tour to Hitsville USA at the Boone Service League’s second annual Motown in the Mountains fundraiser on Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock.

The evening features music and dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and live and silent auctions of offerings from area and regional businesses. Tickets are $40 each or $75 per couple. The live auction begins at 7:45 p.m., with music to follow.

Guiding the musical excursion will be funk, soul and classic rock band Soul Benefactor, which has been enticing High Country music lovers to the dance floor since 2007. The band’s set list of timeless Motown tunes will honor the legacy of the legendary Detroit record company.

“Motown is an inextricable part of soul music in America,” said Soul Benefactor member David Brewer. “When the songs were being recorded, they represented a new level of sophistication in pop music — it’s a magical marriage of deep soul and jazz mixed with undeniable pop hooks.”

“We had a blast with last year’s crowd and have been working on some new Motown surprises for this year,” keyboardist Aaron Burleson said.

Brewer and Burleson said the band is thrilled to once again feature guests from Boone’s Junaluska Gospel Choir. “They add a vocal richness to the show that could not be achieved without them,” Brewer said.

This year’s auction packages include a round of golf at Linville Ridge, passes to Disney World, tickets to the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, a weekend getaway to Abingdon, Va., Carolina Panthers tickets, ASU football tickets, a “Weekend Warrior” package, a half-day fly-fishing trip and much, much more.

Last year, the Boone Service League awarded $7,000 in grants to eight High Country organizations and presented two $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors. In addition, the organization provides financial assistance to families in crisis throughout the year.

Boone Service League president Susan Phipps said this is the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“It’s really important that we raise a lot of money at this particular event,” Phipps said. “There are more and more requests for assistance in this economy. The needs are great.”

Sponsors of this year’s fundraiser include Tar Heel Basement Systems, Allen Wealth Management, Boone Dermatology Clinic, An Appalachian Summer Festival, Linville Ridge, Hendrick Motorsports and many others.
