MLK Celebration at the Ashe Arts Center
The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor a community
celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Ashe Arts
Center in West Jefferson.
The celebration will feature essays, speeches and tributes highlighting the message of King and his teachings of peace, unity and equality in our society.
This year, a special drama presentation of a dialogue between King and an interviewer using a narrative historical perspective will be presented.
The featured performer for the event is Glenis Redmond, a poet, educator, performer and counselor.
According to the Ashe Arts Council, “She presents her poetry in performance that causes the printed word to spring from the page to the audience.”
Redmond has won numerous awards, including the Carrie McCray Literary Award in Poetry, a study fellowship from Vermont Writing Center, study scholarships to the Atlantic Center for the Arts and a week of study with Natalie Goldberg.
She is the 1997 and 1998 Southeast Regional Individual Poetry Slam champion. She placed in the Top 10 in 1996 and 1997 for the National Individual Slam Championship.
The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The Ashe Arts Center is located at 303 School Ave. in West Jefferson. For more information, call (336) 846-ARTS.
