Jerry Burns Memorial Golf Tournament Oct. 6
When it was suggested that the Blowing Rock Rotary Club change the name of its annual benefit golf tournament to The Jerry Burns Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, the suggestion was met with overwhelming, unanimous approval.
That's not because Jerry Burns was the greatest golfer in the area, but because his words and deeds created much good and civic pride for the town of Blowing Rock.
The Jerry Burns Memorial Charity Golf Tournament will take place at the Blowing Rock Country Club on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Applications for foursomes and single players are still being taken.
"Jerry Burns would be the first to admonish us for making a fuss over him," said Rita Davis, president of the Blowing Rock Rotary Club. "At the same time, he would be the first to stand up and applaud the community for its widespread support of our town's very active Rotary Club.
"Most of the monies we raise during the year go to support local nonprofit organizations and scholarships for students in Watauga County. It is fair to say that Jerry truly loved and believed in the work we do. He has worked at this golf tournament as a volunteer, and energized everyone around him with his enthusiasm and presence."
Tee time for the Jerry Burns Memorial Golf Tournament, presented by the Blowing Rock Rotary Club, is 1 p.m., with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Practice and warm-up areas will be open to tournament participants at noon.
Jerry Burns was editor in chief of the Blowing Rocket for 44 years until his retirement in 2009. Jerry died in April 2010 after a brief battle with cancer.
In addition to covering the town's people, places and events, he was active with Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue, the Blowing Rock Stage Company, the Blowing Rock Historical Society and other community organizations.
"Jerry was Blowing Rock," said Cullie Tarleton, state representative in Raleigh and longtime friend of Burns. "He knew its people past and current, its history, its warts and its beauty. But most of all, he truly knew his hometown and his family.
"He was a one person Chamber of Commerce."
Entry fees for Wednesday's Jerry Burns Memorial Charity Golf Tournament are $150 for non-members of the Blowing Rock Country Club and $125 for Country Club members. The cost includes greens and cart fees, souvenirs, as well as dinner at the Lake House at the conclusion of play.
