High Country Pride Around the World

"Pride Around the World" is this year's theme for High Country Pride's annual event mission to unite, celebrate, and support, the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual) community.

June's three-day celebration in Boone is the biggest of the group's five-year history, and it's conducted in partnership with local businesses, churches, non-profits, community groups and educational institutions.

The "Hee Haw Bingo" fundraiser event includes a night of Bingo sponsored by AIDS Leadership Foothills-Area Alliance and High Country Pride. Hee Haw Bingo will be held at High County United Church of Christ on June 11. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission of $20 buys eight rounds of Bingo.

Concessions including pizza, snacks and drinks will be available. Tickets will be sold at Yum Yum Foods to Go, Earthfare and Neaco.

Participants are encouraged to dress up based on the Hee Haw theme. High Country United Church is on US 421 North in Vilas.

Appalachian State University, funded in part by the North Carolina Humanities Council, will be sponsoring a free symposium. "We are Family: Untangling the Interwoven Connections and Disconnects of MountainQueers" will feature a community discussion and documentary movie "Out in the Silence" at ASU's Belk Library in Room 114. The events are on June 12.

At 11 a.m. there will be a panel discussion on the topic "Hidden Cultures: Dialogues of Cultural Diversity and Inclusiveness." The discussion will be followed by the documentary shown at 1 p.m. Out in the Silence simultaneously tells the story of one Pennsylvania mountain town's turbulent reaction to a same-sex marriage announcement in the local paper and a gay teen being harassed in school. Free parking is located in the ASU Library Parking Deck.

The Pride Dance, featuring VJ "Dr.D," will be held Saturday, June 12, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.
