Next Wednesday, Halloween will arrive, and whether you’re looking to be scared in a Haunted House or Hospital, trick-or-treating for the kids or the trunk-or-treat at area churches, all of this and more can be found in and around Ashe County.
A park ranger will lead a haunted hayride through the New River State Park, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26. This will be a tractor pulled hayride. Following the ride, individuals will sit around a campfire and hear scary stories. Space is limited, so anyone interested in participating should reserve a spot by calling (336) 982-2587. The ride will begin at the U.S. 221 Visitor Center.
The Lansing Haunted House
The haunted house is open from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27. Admission is $5 per person, and refreshments are available for purchase. The haunted house is set up in the old rock-faced Lansing School. Parking is available in the gravel lot out front of the school and on the American Legion Ballfield if weather allows. The Wilkes Heritage Museum will host Zombie Night at the Museum with kids’ games for younger children, along with mini ghost tours beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. The cost is $5 per child for kids through age 12. A zombie walk and thriller dance for ages 13 and older will be held for $10 each. Beginning at 8 p.m., “Night of the Living Dead” will be shown during the evening. Food and refreshments will be available. Wrestling and Costume Contest
Wrestling All Star Promotions will be hosting wrestling and a costume contest for kids, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Fleetwood Community Center. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for those 5 and younger. All Ashe County students get $1 off admission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with bell time set for 7:30 p.m. For more information, call (336) 620-9971.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Thursday, Oct. 27, the Haunted Hospital will be presented again by the Ashe County Honor Guard in the old hospital at 410 McConnell St. in Jefferson. Admission is $5 per person and children age 10 and younger will be admitted free with a paying adult. Proceeds benefit the honor guard.
Masquerade Ball and Dinner
From 7 p.m. until midnight on Saturday, Oct. 27, a Halloween Masquerade Ball and Dinner will be held at Jefferson Landing. Featured entertainment will be White Chocolate. The cost is $150 per couple or $75 for singles. Hors d’oeuvres and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., respectively. The costume contest will begin at 10 p.m. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. The event will benefit the children’s trust endowment fund. For more information, call (336) 982-4588.
Helen’s Halloween Bash
Helen’s Sports Bar and Grille will host a Halloween Bash, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Alibi and guests will perform. Guests are invited to wear their best costumes and cash prizes will be awarded. There is a $5 cover charge.
Baron Cooper Photography in downtown West Jefferson will host a photography benefit with proceeds going to Camp New Hope. Those individuals interested can have their photos made during trick-or-treat hours in town, approximately 3:30 to 5 p.m. BCP is located at 101 N. Jefferson Ave. in West Jefferson, between Cutter’s Edge and Pa’s Unique Boutique.
Halloween Costume Parade
From 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, a Halloween Costume Parade will be held at the Ashe County Public Library, located at 148 Library Road in West Jefferson. Organizers are inviting everyone to come in for a treat, but no tricks. For more information, call (336) 846-2041.
Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church will host a fall festival entitled, “The Lord’s Harvest.” The event will be held at approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, on Lee Osborne Road in Lansing. Featured will be hayrides, games for kids, the Lord’s Harvest and Hayrides and games for the kids. Faith Fellowship will host a fall festival from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, presenting the gospel through a play and skit, and will also host carnival-type games, a bouncy house, train rides, food and candy.
Trunk or Treat
The annual Children’s Halloween Celebration will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, with trunk-or-treat available at the First Baptist Church in West Jefferson. The Ashe County Farmers’ Market will be open and selling hot dogs and drinks. The West Jefferson Fire Department will offer rides on one of its old fire engines. Snap Photography will also take photos of the trunk-or-treaters from 3 to approximately 8 p.m. at the farmers’ market. Costumed children can bring three cans of food or a $5 donation to receive one professional 4x6 photo. The food will be donated to Ashe Outreach for the Backpack Program, which feeds more than 300 kids and their families each week.
From 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, South Fork Baptist Church will host a trunk-or-treat in the church parking lot. The church plans a safe, friendly environment where children can participate in fun activities and receive free treats. The church is located on Railroad Grade Road, beside Todd Post Office off N.C. 194. Real Life Church will host trunk or treat from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at their location at the old Chevrolet dealership parking lot, across from Buck Mountain Road on Jefferson Avenue.
Calvary Free Will Baptist Church will host a harvest party from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31. Featured will be games, prizes, pizza and more. Those attending are invited to dress as a favorite Biblical character and enter the Bible character costume contest, which will not allow ghosts, goblins or ghouls. The church is located on Old Wilkesboro Road in Glendale Springs.
Trick-or-Treating in Town
From 5:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, several intersections will be blocked off in West Jefferson to allow for children who are trick-or-treating. Partially blocked intersections will include North Church Street and Main Street, West 1st Street and College Avenue, West 2nd Street and College Avenue, West 3rd Street and Wilton Avenue, West 4th Street and North Jefferson Avenue and End of Ridge Avenue and North Jefferson Avenue.
