Avery County takes its spooks and specters seriously every October, and this year’s Halloween festivities are no exception. Listed below are details on just some of the many Halloween celebrations planned around the county. Peruse the list below to make plans to celebrate Halloween all week long.

Thursday, Oct. 25

Healthy Halloween
Healthy Halloween will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Rock Gym in Newland. A variety of health-oriented services will be on hand, and the Red Cross Bloodmobile will also be on site from 1 to 5 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 27

Beary Scary Halloween at Grandfather
Grandfather Mountain will host a “Beary Scary Halloween” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Grandfather Mountain animal habitats. Halloween activities are included with regular admission, but kids ages 4 to 12 in costume get in for half price. Children younger than 4 years of age always receive free admission. Activities will include cookie decorating, crafts, a special bat program, scary stories by storyteller Maggie Christenbury and a “creepy, crawly critters” program. Trunk-or-Treat at Elk Park Christian
Elk Park Christian Church at 220 Old Mill Road, Elk Park, will host a trunk-or-treat from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Trunk or Treat will include treats, games and hot drinks.

Wednesday, Oct. 31

Newland: Trick-or-Treat in Town
Newland Business Association is sponsoring Trick or Treat in Town in Newland, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Goodies will be available along Main Street, and a costume contest with five age categories and prizes will begin at 6 p.m. at the Guy Braswell Annex below Morrison Public Library.

Elk Park: Trick-or-Treat on Main Street

Elk Park is planning is first Trick-or-Treat on Main Street for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31. All businesses and individuals are invited to participate. Bring your car, a table and plenty of decorations. Once the event begins, Main Street will be closed for safety. For more information, call Elk Park Town Hall at (828) 733-9573.
