Green Drinks meets at ASU Solar Decathlon HQ Aug. 9
The next meeting of Green Drinks Boone takes place Aug. 9, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Appalachian State University Solar Decathlon Headquarters, located at 1100 E. King St., in Boone.
The "Solar Homestead" is Appalachian State University's entry in the U.S Dept. of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. The ASU team is one of 20 student-run teams worldwide that was selected to participate in the competition. Inspired by the pioneer spirit of the early settlers in the mountain region of North Carolina, the team has designed a self-sustaining, net-zero energy home.
The project has been entirely designed and constructed by a cross departmental collaboration of Appalachian State students. The Solar Homestead site is carefully crafted as an exhibition of innovative design and includes a high performance home and independent, technologically advanced outbuilding modules (OMs) that function as stand-alone solar collection sites generating solar photovoltaic electricity.
The Aug. 9 Green Drinks is one of the last opportunities to see the project as it nears final completion and before it travels to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where it will compete across 10 different contest areas. The public exhibit on the mall will run Sept. 23 to Oct. 1.
The ASU Solar Decathlon Headquarters is located in the old Mitsubishi dealership, just past New Market Center, on the right when heading east on U.S. 421. After a presentation and tour of the Solar Homestead, during which attendees can learn more about how the project integrates the best of modern solar technology in a way that is aesthetically appealing, the event will move to Peppers Restaurant, located in the Shops at Shadowline, where it will continue until 8 p.m. for discussion, refreshments and food.
The event is hosted by the Blue Ridge Entrepreneurial Council (BREC), an initiative of AdvantageWest, the economic development partnership serving the 23 counties of Western North Carolina. BREC is a regional networking organization that supports entrepreneurs through education programs, mentoring services and capital formation options.
Green Drinks Boone is an informal social networking organization that hosts events on the second Tuesday of the month for anyone interested in "green" activities in the High Country. The slogan of the International Green Drinks organization is "Saving the World One Sip at a Time."
Green Drinks offers a way to catch up with people you know and make new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so the crowd is always different, making Green Drinks a fluid, self- organizing network.
The Boone network organization, meeting since 2008, is among 15 other North Carolina communities and 750 cities worldwide that host monthly gatherings of sustainably-minded people who meet to informally discuss green business, green services and green activities. This and all Green Drinks Boone gatherings are free and open to the public.
