All pet owners feel like they have a friend to the end with their favorite cat, dog or other animal.
Sadly, many times pet owners are not able to care for their pets when that end is near. Sometimes, the owners cannot meet the physical needs of an older pet, and sometimes, it is the financial cost that prohibits them from staying together.

A group in the High Country, called For Animals Sake, runs the Twilight Inn, a retirement village for animals. They care for older animals, even providing hospice and palliative services for them at the end of their lives.

The second annual Tail Wagging Tag Sale, a benefit for the Twilight Inn, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock on Saturday, Dec. 7. The sale will include antiques, house wares, collectibles, furniture, original artwork, fresh baked goods and more.

“The Twilight Inn was originally formed when my elderly clients, in their 90s, became ill,” said Dr. Maggie Federhart, founder of For Animals Sake. “They had acquired 25-plus inside cats, which needed to be placed. They had to be removed from the home before the couple could return home from the hospital. Our local Humane Society was full, and we kept them at my veterinary hospital, Whispering Waters Animal Clinic, until we found them homes. We realized at that time a group was needed to help the animals that had somewhat special needs.”

For Animals Sake serves special needs animals in the Blowing Rock, Boone, Banner Elk and West Jefferson areas.
