Fire and Ice

Every winter, hundreds of High Country residents struggle to pay their utility bills in the face of unforgiving harsh conditions.

To help alleviate part of this burden, Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock is spearheading a fundraiser that will benefit Blue Ridge Electric’s Operation Round-Up campaign.

According to Blue Ridge, Operation Round Up customers’ contributions help provide food, clothing, shelter, health care and other vital community services that will benefit people in need throughout the service area.

The contribution also helps keep neighbors warm in winter by assisting those having trouble paying their electric bill. As voluntary contributors to Operation Round Up, members choose to have their monthly electric bill rounded up to the next highest dollar amount. The difference between the actual bill and the next highest dollar is the amount of the donation.

To raise funds for the program, Meadowbrook Inn will hold the Fire and Ice Cocktail Fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the inn. The event will also promote Blowing Rock’s annual Winterfest.

During the event, local models will serve cocktails, while donning furs supplied by Montaldo’s of Charlotte. Diamonds by Perry’s Gold Mine will also be on display.

The models will serve vodka-based drinks, inspired by Covington Spirits, which makes a yam-based vodka.

“We really want the community to come out for this, because this is a cause that directly benefits the community,” Meadowbrook sales executive Meliss Garramone. “We saw a window of opportunity to bring vendors together and make a fun event for tourists and locals alike, as well as raise money for Operation Round Up.”

Vendors will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to the cause, while 30 percent of ticket sales will directly benefit the campaign, Garramone said.

“It’s a good way to give back to the community and for people to warm up before continuing on with their evening,” she said.

To buy tickets, call (828) 295-4300. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Meadowbrook Inn is located at 711 Main St. in Blowing Rock.
