Eatery will keep on peddling despite fire
A fire damaged the Peddler Steakhouse on Blowing Rock Road last Tuesday, but construction is already underway and plans in place to reopen.
Owner Murray Broome said he hopes to open the doors in approximately two months.
"Thank goodness for small towns," Broome said.
"We already have our contractors in place."
The entire kitchen and electrical system will need to be replaced.
"Because of the age of the building, extra efforts must be made to ensure that we meet current codes and regulations," Broome said.
"Due to the rapid response time and extraordinary efforts of the Boone Fire Department, the dining room and main structure of the building were not seriously damaged."
This year marks Broome's 40th year in business with the Peddler.
He worked there for two years before purchasing the restaurant in 1971.
"Fortunately, until now, we have had no major incidents. We will take this opportunity to bring you a totally up-to-code, better-functioning, more efficient Peddler Steakhouse ready for another 40 years," Broome said.
The community has shown a tremendous amount of support, he added, from hotels, restaurants, churches, past and present employees. "We are proud to be a part of this community," he said.
Broome said the employees will continue to receive a paycheck during the closure.
"I hope they'll hang in with us through the two-month closure," he said.
The Peddler Steakhouse will extend Peddler cards and honor gift certificates past the expiration date for the amount of time the restaurant is closed.
Broome said the organizations and businesses that had planned holiday parties at the Peddler had already been contacted. Broome assisted them in planning parties at other locations.
