Eat Beat: Oktoberfest at Meadowbrook
From left, Todd Rice, John Hastings and Jeff Walker, the brains behind Boone Brewing Company, are offering their seasonal Blowing Rock Oktoberfest at Meadowbrook Inn's Oktoberfest this weekend.
This weekend marks your first chance to fest in the High
Country. Oktoberfest, that is.
Glasses will be raised and strudel will be served, all at the
Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock, as part of what organizers hope will be the first annual
Oktoberfest celebration.
"The chamber (of commerce) approached us and asked if we might be
interested in doing a food and beverage event that would coordinate with the Concert in the Park on
Sunday, Oct. 3," Meadowbrook general manager Vicky McLean said.
What better way to celebrate
a band called "Die Rhinelanders" than with Oktoberfest?
"Everybody loves Oktoberfest," McLean
said. "If our event is successful, we may do some exploration ... to see what we might build it into
for the community."
Sunday brings a German buffet with beer-braised sausages, spatzle, potato
pancakes, red cabbage and saurbraten (beef roast). Have a finicky eater? She's thought of
that.
"We'll also have green beans, apple sauce, hot dogs and french fries," she said.
And save room for Black Forest Cake and apple strudel.
McLean, a fan of dark beer,
is excited about two special brews, served special for Oktoberfest.
"We're offering Warsteiner
Dunkel," she said. "That's a really dark and sweet German beer."
Add in locally brewed Blowing
Rock Ale, Oktoberfest Edition, and you've got a High Country party fit for the
motherland.
It's not just the menu that's German. Think German decor, from Bavarian flags to
lederhosen-clad servers to the accordion music in the background.
The event is from noon to 3
p.m. and is only a short walk from the Concert in the Park, to be held at 4 p.m. Parking is included
with the buffet.
Ticket prices (including tax and gratuity) are $16 for adults, $8 for
children and free for kids aged 4 and under. For more information or to make reservations, call the
Meadowbrook Inn at (828) 295-4300.
The Meadowbrook Inn is located at 711 Main St. in Blowing
Rock.
