Doing Their Part
After seeing the tragic images of the Boston Marathon bombing
unfold on live television, the residents of Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation wanted to take
In addition to this weekend’s 12th annual Spring Fling activity day, the care facility will also hold a 5K Walk/Run this Saturday, with proceeds benefiting the victims’ families.
Registration is $20 and will wrap up by 8:30 a.m. for the start of the race.
Julie Getty, marketing director for Glenbridge, said Spring Fling is the grand finale to events planned at the care facility this week in honor of National Nursing Home Week.
“We have an activity scheduled every day to honor the residents, employees and their families,” Getty said. “Saturday is the last day of the awareness week.”
The events in Boston, Mass., added meaning to the special day.
“Our residents still want to be part of the community and give back,” Getty said. “When they saw and heard everything that happened, they wanted to do something. So, they had the idea to do the walk.”
Following the 5K, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Spring Fling will offer live entertainment, music, face painting, children’s games, a dunking both and, of course, food. Getty said there will also be a silent auction.
Since the event began in 2001, Spring Fling has been a recurring hit for residents, Getty said.
“They love it,” she said. “The residents want to be a part of it, and they participate as much as they can. They eat lunch with everyone, and they play some of the games.”
The event is also a homecoming for current and past residents.
“We have a lot of patients for short-term rehab, and it gives them the chance to come back and mingle with staff and residents,” Getty said. “The residents love people coming in. We invite anyone to come and visit. This gives them a chance to see a lot of visitors and action going on.”
Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation is located at 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road in Boone.
