'Damaged' comedy hits Banner Elk

Dan Damage. With that name, he's either a comedian or a supervillain.

"I fell in love with it the very first time," he said.

Comedy: Not worldwide destruction, and it hits Banner Elk Thursday.

The rush of the stage took him in on his first open mic in Naples, Fla., and now, two years later, it has yet to let go. Come Thursday, he hopes the High Country has more praise than tomatoes for his act.

Damage (whose real last name is Catron), works at Linville Ridge by day, but by night, he lets the self deprecating jokes fly.

"One thing I realized," he said, "people love to laugh at other people ... even if they have the same problem. They never believe they have the same problem."

After all, "it's always funny to laugh at someone else," he said.

And, with Damage, there's a lot to laugh at, mainly where his jobs are concerned. He's had every restaurant job you can imagine and, if you've ever navigated a dining room with a food tray, you can understand where the jokes come in.

"Basically, it's the biggest collection of every guy at every crappy job I've had," he said.
And his art background helps.

"I come from a family of plumbers and mechanics, so being an artist in that sort of environment is not really encouraging," he said.

The New Jersey-born comic insists what he does is easier than you think.

"You look around, and if you have an interest in people, you're going to find something funny," he said. "It's just about finding a punchline."

As for a few High Country punchlines?

"You have your standard take a shot here and there about southerners, but most of it is still cheap laughs about work," he said.

His entourage is a mesh of Floridians and locals. Also performing are Ed "Roadblock" Deeson, Nico, Magnum Johnson, Joe Mobley, Charlotte Schlesinger and "Big" Jon Williams.

The show happens Thursday and is called "Damaged Goodz," billed as "a night of tapas and comedy."

Expect drink specials and a $15 cover charge. The night brings two shows, at 7 p.m. and midnight. Sponsored by Barra and Sorrento's, the shows happen at the Village Shops in Banner Elk.
