Contra dance in Sugar Grove March 22
Boone Country Dancers is stepping into Sugar Grove for a March
22 contra dance.
The community contra dance will take place at the Old Cove Creek School gym, located at 207 Dale Adams Road in Sugar Grove, and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. with a beginner’s workshop.
The half-hour workshop teaches newcomers the fundamentals of contra dance, with a focus on having fun, according to Boone Country Dancers. The scheduled contra dance will run from 8 to 11 p.m., with a waltz break at 9:30 p.m.
Bob Kogut and Friends will provide the music, and Terry Doyle will call.
Dancers of all ages are invited to attend, and no partner — or experience — is necessary.
“If you can walk in a circle, you can contra dance,” BCD chairman Bill Anderson said in a previous interview. “It doesn’t take much time to learn the basics, and once you have those moves down, you can really start to enjoy the whole process.”
A contra dance is a traditional, folk-type dance in which two lines, contra to each other, progress up and down the hall, Anderson explained. The accompanying music is 32 measures long, he said, and each sequence of moves — led by a caller — progresses a dancer and his or her partner to the next couple, where the dance then repeats itself. At the end of the line, a couple will work its way back up the hall.
The event will be co-sponsored by Mountain Alliance, a nonprofit organization that describes itself as a “community of individuals committed to providing Watauga County high school-aged youth with opportunities to explore and develop their leadership potential through experiential learning.”
Admission to the contra dance is $7 for adults, $5 for high school students and free for anyone 12 years old or younger.
