Constitution Day program Sept. 17 at ASU
Discussions focusing on “The U.S. Constitution and the Death
Penalty” will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 17, in Room 114 Belk Library and Information
Commons at Appalachian State University.
Rhys Hester from the Department of Government and
Justice Studies will present “Evolving Standards of Democracy: The Supreme Court’s Role in the
Debate Over the Death Penalty.”
Marian Williams, also from the Department of Government and
Justice Studies, will present “The Jury and the Death Penalty: Issues and
Concerns.”
Constitution Day recognizes adoption of the U.S. Constitution. The observance was
created in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by the late Sen. Robert Byrd. The amendment
requires that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the
history of the American Constitution on that day.
