Rosen Hall at Appalachian State University will be the site for the Oct. 24 fall concert of the Watauga Community Band. The concert will be at 3 p.m. under the direction of Bill Winkler.

With a suggested donation of $5, all proceeds will go to the Hunger & Health Coalition, the sponsor of this afternoon of music.

The mission of the Hunger & Health Coalition is to relieve poverty and hunger in a compassionate manner for those experiencing economic hardship. This assistance may include food, medicine and referrals to other community resources. With each $1 contributed, the HHC can purchase $7 of food.

The organization serves 750 families in an average month and dispenses more than 1,000 prescriptions.

The Watauga Community Band, an all volunteer band, was organized in1987. It is comprised of musicians from all over the High Country, who have a love of music and enjoy getting together to play.

The musicians include former band directors, professional and amateur musicians and Appalachian State University students, as well as retirees and high school students. These musicians practice weekly year round to prepare for their performances.

Many have seen the Watauga Community "summer band," wearing their red shirts, playing at the Jones House summer lawn concerts; the Blowing Rock and Boone Fourth of July parades; summer concerts at Fred's Mercantile on Beech Mountain; concerts at Shatley Springs; opening for "Horn In The West" performances; opening of Watauga High School; ground breaking and tree topping celebration of Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. They play many summer concerts at local campgrounds to entertain campers.

Directed by Steve Frank, this band of about 25 musicians plays light music, such as marches, swing, big band and patriotic music.

The Watauga Community Concert Band is a larger group that performs four concerts a year, the Fall Concert, the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, and the Memorial Day Concert.

This group of about 50 musicians plays more challenging music, with the upcoming repertoire, including selections like "Golden Age of Broadway," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Peter and the Wolf," "Amazing Grace," "The Avenger March," "St. Louis Blues and Fanfare," and "Dance & Serenade" composed by George Naff of Boone.
