A new 5K race on the campus of Appalachian State University seeks to remember a beloved student and support those who share his ambitions.

Landon Hill was 21 when he died unexpectedly in fall 2011 after contracting bacterial meningitis while studying abroad in Spain.

Among the organizations that Hill was involved with at ASU was International Appalachian, which works to encourage students to study abroad, to engage with visiting international students in Boone and to promote mutual respect for different cultures.

INTAPP members created the Landon Hill Study Abroad Memorial Scholarship fund in fall 2011 as a way to remember their fellow student.

This year, the group will hold its first Coffee Buzz 5K on April 27 to raise money for the fund, which will support a student participating in a study abroad program.

The race will start and end at the Duck Pond on campus, although the exact route has not yet been released.

Because Hill was an avid coffee drinker, the race includes several local coffee shop sponsors and will serve the brew before and after the race, said sophomore Colleen McKearney, a member of International Appalachian.

“The people who knew Landon were just trying to think of a fun twist to add to the race that kind of was inspired by him,” she said.

While McKearney didn’t know Hill personally, she said his energy and dedication to the club still pervades today.

The 5K will help another student follow his passion for international travel and experiencing other cultures. One $700 scholarship will be offered to a student participating in either a short-term, faculty-led program during the summer or a semester-long study abroad experience, McKearney said.

INTAPP hopes to expand the scholarship in the future, she said.

The race begins at 8:30 a.m. April 27 at Appalachian State University. Registration and packet pick-up begins at 7:30 a.m.

Registration is $15, and the club also will accept donations.

Runners may register the morning of the race or before the race in the Plemmons Student Union.
Registration will be offered from 2 to 5 p.m. April 18 beside the ASU Bookstore in the international hallway. A table also will be set up from 1 to 3 p.m. April 23 and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 25 near the Cascades Café.
