'Christmas in the Mountains: Vol. 3' now available
By Melanie

Musicians have once again donated their time and talents in the Christmas
spirit to benefit the Health and Hunger Coalition. Christmas in
the Mountains Vol. 3 is now available at 72 locations across the High Country for the same
price as previous two years of $10.
The CD features the music of Amantha Mill, Todd Wright,
Jeff Little and Friends, Diana and Sarvis Ridge, Strictly Clean and Decent, Rumple Memorial
Presbyterian Church Choir, Bob and Ellie, Sharon Mitchell, Ruth and Steve Smith, Helen White, Joe
Shannon, The Kingston Trio and Jessica Presnell.
The proceeds of the CD sales benefit the
HHC initiative to end childhood hunger in the High Country.
"Our goal this year is to
raise $35,000. In this kind of economy, I know that is an ambitious number," said Leslie Shavell,
project coordinator. "However, so much more is needed to help those folks who used to be working
and were productive citizens, and now can not even afford to buy food and medicine."
Many
of the victims of the economy are the children of struggling families, Shavell said.
The
HHC has allocated funding to double the food provided to families with children under the age of
18.
"The number of clients we are working with is unprecedented," said HHC executive
director Compton Fortuna. "One in seven children in North Carolina goes hungry every day. The
effects of childhood hunger are immediate and long term."
The HHC has already raised
$11,000 in pre-sales of the Christmas CD.
For more information or to make a donation, call
HHC at (828) 262-1628. The CD is available for sale on the Web site at http://www.hungercoalition.com
The organization has launched a second initiative in connection to ending childhood hunger
to provide items to mothers who cannot afford to take care of their children. Products that will
be made available to them include baby food, formula, children's vitamins, and OTC medicines made
just for children. Any one in the community who knows sources of these items is asked to call HHC
at the number listed above.
