Christmas Expo at Greenway Baptist
Inside the gym at the Greenway Baptist Church, a Christmas
wonderland awaits, with decorated Christmas trees, vendors aplenty, a bounty of food and baked goods
and the festive sounds of Christmas music.
It’s the inaugural Christmas Expo in November — A One Stop Shop, to be held at Greenway Baptist Church Friday, Nov. 15, from 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
General admission costs $3 or the equivalent in nonperishable food items.
More than 26 vendors will take part, including Avon, Arbonne, Paparazzi Jewelry, 31, Times Past Toys, Mountain Man Wood Designs, quilting items, Premier Designs, crocheted rope scarves, vintage décor, Gifts in a Jar, handmade soaps, Pink Zebra, ornaments, Deco Wreaths and more.
The Children’s Council of Watauga County will be there, too, selling calendars as a fundraiser for a diaper drive. The Angel Tree will also be set up, allowing visitors to help brighten Christmas for children in need.
Kids can pay a visit to Santa and Mrs. Claus from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, with a photographer on hand to capture the memories.
The Christmas Expo’s origins can be traced to the Parent Teacher Organization at Greenway Baptist Child Development Center. Seeing a need, PTO founder Amanda Winebarger and her fellow parents set out to form a fund to help meet the needs of teachers, classrooms, children and their families.
Since then, the PTO has helped organize numerous fall festivals, yard sales and fundraising lunches to contribute to the effort. The group even threw a Christmas party for daycare staff members and their families. Winebarger began toying with the idea of an even larger holiday event — the Christmas Expo.
The intention, though, remains the same — supporting the teachers and classrooms of the Greenway Baptist Child Development Center. The center isn’t a “drop your kid off at the babysitters all day” kind of affair, she said, instead describing it a “hands-on center that teaches young children their colors, letters … and more, preparing each child or kindergarten when they leave.”
The Christmas Expo will help provide the center’s No. 1 need — books. The daycare is also seeking art supplies, dress-up clothes, teaching materials and other classroom items.
