Chat Roulette a social gamble

Face to face with a complete stranger.

It was only a matter of time before science-fiction author Ray Bradbury's dim outlook on the future reaped what it had sown.

Chat Roulette is connecting people around the world from within their own homes in a whole new way. Now you can be randomly connected to anyone in the world with an Internet connection and a Web camera.

The name says it all. Roulette is a chancy game in which either the bold or stupid take part. Who you end up connecting to on this site is a toss up. But the results are tremendous.

Chat Roulette user Jared McQueen talked with a gamut of people within the first 15 minutes of visiting the site. There was a student from Holland who lived beneath sea level, some girls from the Deep South of the United States, and a group of German musicians. Then there was a long stretch of self-abusing saps.

McQueen started juggling blades at this point and received interested virtual applause. A man from Italy asked, "Do you work in a circus," to which he responded with a heartfelt, "I wish."

Users on this Web site can connect with someone who they have never met and may never see again. If either of the players don't like what they see, then they can pass on to the next random person. There are some rules in place, but from what was shown, it is unlikely they are enforced.
Users must be 16 years old to play the roulette. Inappropriate materials should not be portrayed on the site to other users. Those are about the extent of the rules, and both were disregarded within 20 minutes of using the site.

But if transporting images of yourself and the room you're in across the globe sounds interesting, this site is a trip. Area comedienne Katy Conroy recently joked at Koncepts Hookah Lounge during a routine that you should never Chat Roulette alone.

From time spent on the site, a few things are apparent. There are a lot of users who are men, young and old, who are looking to talk with pretty women. McQueen was able to entertain some of them with sitar playing and knife juggling, but the interactions were brief. In actuality, the site is not censored whatsoever, and, since it is relatively live, it would be hard to enforce. And, an astounding number of global citizens speak English.
