Blowing Rock's Winterfest is for the dogs! At least it is Sunday, Jan. 30. That's when canine fashionistas will gather at Blowing Rock Elementary School for the third annual Winter Paws Dog Show, and it's something to howl about, said organizer Cathy Heninger who judged last year's showdown.

"We probably had about 60 dogs last year," she said.

And they come in all shapes and sizes.

"Everyone just had a good time, so I'm hoping it will be that way this year," she said.

The canine fun culminates in a competition with 12 categories, and they're not the categories you'll see at Westminster.

Think Owner/Dog Look-Alike, Best Handshake, Most Mysterious Heritage, et cetera.

"I think we have some categories that are the smallest and largest, so anyone can enter those," Heninger said.

And if you're planning on winning the Owner/Dog Look-Alike contest, bring your A-game.

"Last year, it was real cute," Heninger said. "Some of them would put sunglasses on the dog, and they would wear sunglasses or just have an outfit with the same color on."

But your dog won't be the only star of the show.

"We're bringing out three dogs from the Humane Society, because everything is benefitting the Humane Society," she said. "We'll parade them around and give everyone a chance to see them."
And it's not just fun for people.

"I always bring my dog too," Heninger said. "He loves it."

But the real treat is sharing the bond between you and your pet with likeminded High Country dog owners.

"So many times you can't bring your dogs to these things," she said. "People love to go and participate with their dogs. That's what we're hoping for, that they come and have a good time with their dogs and learn something about the Humane Society."

And, with the new shelter set to open soon, it's a great time to get involved.

The $10 registration fee ($1 for each additional category) benefits the Watauga Humane Society, and registration forms are available at blowingrockwinterfest.com. Free samples of dog food and free doggie treats will be offered with registration and, for an additional $10, you can get a special photo. Registration starts at 1 p.m. at Blowing Rock Elementary School (165 Morris St.) Jan. 30.

The event is co-sponsored by the Watauga Humane Society, The Pet Place at the Shops at Shadowline, Blue Buffalo Pet Foods and Scott MacIntosh of Blowing Rock Investment Properties.
